Naviga End-of-Year Recap
Selected Highlights of 2024
Naviga continues to transform the media industry with innovative solutions that streamline workflows and enhance operational efficiency. From modernizing newsroom systems to advancing digital strategies, Naviga’s technologies are helping companies adapt to the evolving demands of publishing. Clients across the globe have praised Naviga’s hands-on support and commitment to providing reliable, user-friendly platforms for content, advertising and audience management. Below are some meaningful 2024 collaborations.
Reliable Content Systems
Paddock Publications
Paddock Publications, a family-owned newspaper publisher that delivers local and global news along with business and entertainment coverage, has revolutionized its newsroom efficiency by transitioning to Naviga’s NSC Production system, modernizing workflows and addressing challenges posed by outdated technology.
Since the upgrade, the media company has experienced enhanced ease of use and reliability. “Posting to the web is much easier and faster,” said Travis Siebrass, deputy managing editor, digital at Paddock Publications. “Getting into our old system was a pain for reporters.” The move to the new environment has delivered significant operational benefits. “The systems are very reliable. Writer is up 99.9999999% of the time,” Siebrass added. The adoption of Naviga’s platforms has streamlined print and digital production while allowing a greater focus on quality reporting. By embracing Naviga’s dependable technologies, Paddock Publications is also ensuring a more efficient operation. Importantly, Naviga has provided excellent guidance during the transition. “I would recommend working with Naviga because of the software and support,” Siebrass noted.
Iliffe News and Media
Iliffe News and Media, a multimedia business with a large portfolio of newspapers, websites, magazines, radio and television, has successfully installed Naviga’s GN4 content management system, marking a major step in its digital transformation. “We were looking for an integrated system that would allow us to continue on our journey to becoming a truly digitally-focused publisher,” said Ian Carter, chief operating officer. “Naviga appealed as its suite of products allowed us to have our commercial and editorial operations in one place.”
The new system has streamlined operations, reduced time spent on newspapers, and enabled editorial staff to focus on content creation for both print and digital platforms. “It is important for us strategically that we scale back resources dedicated to newspapers, which are clearly in long-term decline, and focus on growth areas,” Carter explained. He added that “The system has allowed us to reduce time spent on our newspapers and to ensure as many members of editorial as possible are platform-agnostic, focusing on content rather than writing specifically for print or digital.”
Innovative Advertising Software Solutions
The Globe and Mail
Naviga Global partnered with The Globe and Mail, Canada’s leading newspaper, to modernize its ad booking and classified ad system. The new system was designed to support ad booking for the print product—an essential element of sustaining vital revenue streams. Previously reliant on a 20-year-old platform, the publication sought a modern solution to enhance safety, stability, and efficiency.
Iliffe News and Media
Postmedia, a prominent news media group in Canada, has significantly improved its advertising operations with Naviga Ad. Transitioning from a “homegrown solution” with multiple components to this streamlined, web-based application has consolidated workflows and eliminated the need for multiple servers.
Ed Dales, Postmedia’s director of applications, acknowledged that a significant shift can be challenging for any company but praised Naviga’s platform, which has been functioning well: “The application is better structured. We have oneapplication that we can access.” Naviga has been willing to help the company with the launch of Naviga Ad and smaller, “phase 2” refinements. For example, a client portal lets advertisers preview ads before invoices are sent, removing the last-minute stress of staff having to track down ads for clients. “Naviga has helped us improve workflows,” Dales remarked. Plans are underway to integrate payment processing into the portal to further enhance efficiency. Dales highlighted Naviga’s responsiveness stating, “Naviga is always willing to spin us up a test environment.” Moving forward, Naviga will help Postmedia replatform its websites and refine approval structures to deliver a more efficient, customer-focused advertising experience.
Efficiency-Driven Circulation Tools
The Palladium-Times
The Palladium-Times, a newspaper publisher in Oswego, New York, successfully transitioned to the CirculationPro platform, which makes all circulation tasks more efficient. As part of this integration, they seamlessly incorporated papers acquired earlier in the year into their existing Latrobe CirculationPro database.
CirculationPro, a modern system, replaced The Palladium-Times’ 1984 system which had been underperforming. Jamie Crossett, circulation manager, highlighted the improvements, stating, “Everything [about the platform] is better. Running press runs is a lot easier. Dealer payments are easier to put in. The customer service is amazing.” While Naviga is motivated to help companies save time, they are just as motivated to spend time as much time as needed to help companies transition to new platforms. Crossett praised Naviga’s approach to teaching The Palladium-Times staff new systems, saying, “Naviga has been phenomenal. They offered tremendous help and they taught me by having me do the work with guidance, not just telling me about it.”
Tribune Publishing Company
Naviga supported Tribune Publishing in migrating its North-East titles—including The New York Daily News, The Virginian-Pilot, Daily Press, Hartford Courant, and their affiliated weekly and free publications—from an on-premises DSI Circulation environment to the Naviga-hosted NCS Circulation and Subscribe platform.
Initially, Tracy Craft, senior director of shared services at Tribune Publishing Company, was hesitant about the move. Despite a long and successful partnership with Naviga, Tribune Publishing Company had developed a highly customized system tailored to its unique needs, making the transition seem daunting. However, Craft was ultimately on board. She described the switch as a great decision, explaining that “Naviga took a strong interest in understanding Tribune’s business model.” The new system has delivered significant benefits, including a reduced reliance on offshore employees, full automation of the subscriber activity import process, and streamlined transaction processing. “The SAI process is gold,” Craft emphasized, adding that Naviga not only provided the tools but also ensured Tribune had the support needed for implementation. She remarked “I have a very dedicated team of rockstar superstars. Naviga recognized this and went beyond simply providing tools—they ensured we had all we needed to make it happen.”
